More than a thousand years ago, this place was very different.
Hjörleifshöfði once stood surrounded by the sea. What is now a vast black-sand plain was once water, and the cave known today as Yoda Cave was shaped by the sea itself.
Over centuries, eruptions beneath Katla sent enormous glacial floods across the landscape, carrying sand and gravel with them. Little by little, the coastline moved away, leaving this ancient sea cave standing far from the ocean.
Today, Gígjagjá — better known as Yoda Cave — opens onto a landscape of black sand and gravel, beneath the immense walls of Hjörleifshöfði.
It’s strange to stand inside a place shaped by an ocean that is no longer there.
Nature doesn’t simply create landscapes.
It keeps changing them, long after we stop noticing.
